The Duchess of Queensberry rules, also known as the Queensberry rules, are a set of rules for boxing. Named after the 9th Marquess of Queensberry, John Douglas, they were formulated in 1867 to regulate the sport of boxing. The rules introduced weight classes, rounds, and gloves for fighters to use during fights. They also abolished many of the brutal practices that were common in bare-knuckle boxing, such as hitting an opponent while they were down or holding them in order to punch them. The Queensberry rules have since become the standard for boxing around the world and are still used to this day.
